Prof. Wiles earned his undergraduate degree in biology at Harding University in Arkansas. He earned master’s degrees in both biology (Portland State University, Oregon) and geosciences (Mississippi State University).

After having taught biology and other sciences at a number of colleges, universities, and institutions of secondary education for several years, Wiles earned a Ph.D. at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, where he retains an appointment as Associate Director of the Evolution Education Research Centre.

He joined the faculty in the Biology Department at Syracuse University in 2008 and holds a secondary appointment in SU’s Department of Science Teaching.

Wiles’ research focuses on the teaching and learning of evolution—the central and unifying concept of biology.
