Prof. Gilfus teaches upper and lower division courses in the Writing Program at Syracuse University.

Gilfus’ service in the Writing Program has included appointments as coordinator for service learning and new teacher training/curriculum development. She has served as an instructor and supervisor for student teachers in the School of Education at Syracuse University and St. Lawrence, and as an assistant professor in the English Department at SUNY Jefferson.

Before beginning her work in post-secondary academics, Gilfus spent 13 years as a high school English teacher and also worked as Director of Communications for Loretto Geriatric Center, a not-for-profit organization serving more than 4,000 older adults in Central New York. Gilfus’ chief research interests include academic literacy, affect, composition pedagogy, authorship, and theories of teaching and learning. She is currently working on research regarding affect in critical pedagogy and designing materials to assist in building bridges between high school and college literacy practices.
